overcast all day, v humid / undulating cloud layers / facing E / high about 75 degrees F / 9/24/11 10 pWe've had almost a week of gray skies, periods of rain and clammy humidity. These bands of clouds were shifting tonality and changing shape as I painted them. The low clouds seem to soak up the ambient light like sponges.
I was amused by the separation of pigments in the upper right. These grays were made using French ultramarine and burnt umber. As it dried, the burnt umber separated out to create a warm spot. Watercolors can be so different in the morning when they are dry; this is one of their charms and a reminder to let go.
