Sunset

When one leaves a watercolor to dry, unexpected and interesting interactions occur. The colors touching each other change, hard edges form, colors bleed into one another. The drying colors either become duller or more vibrant, or change into a blend at their edges. When one comes back to the painting, a different aspect appears, perhaps something that is undesirable or even serendipitous.

The darkness of the blue on the left middle mixed with the alizarin crimson above it. The blue became much darker as it dried and the crimson bled into it.

This little sunset was painted on Saturday, September 3rd facing west at about 7:30 pm. Sunset comes earlier now and it is a blatant announcement of the changing seasons.
